Civic Role — Alex Barr, Alderman of the City of London
City of London

Civic Role

Alderman of the
City of London

Elected to the Court of Aldermen in 2022 for the Ward of Cordwainer, having served this historic ward as a Common Councillor since 2017.

About the Role

One of the world's oldest elected offices

The office of Alderman is one of the oldest in the English‑speaking world, with the Court of Aldermen playing a leading role in the governance of the City of London for more than 800 years and predating Parliament itself. Today, Aldermen are elected by voters from each of the City’s 25 wards and serve as senior figures within the City’s unique constitutional arrangements.

I was elected Alderman for the Ward of Cordwainer in 2022, bringing an established commitment to public service and a deep understanding of the financial and professional services sector that defines the Square Mile and reaches far beyond it.

As an Alderman, I combine active engagement on the policy issues that matter most to the City - particularly financial services, international competitiveness and the long‑term resilience of the UK economy - with the role’s many civic and governance responsibilities.

The City of London

A unique constitutional and financial centre

The City of London, the historic Square Mile, is both a global financial centre of strategic importance and the UK's oldest continuous municipal democracy, governed by the City of London Corporation and its elected Court of Common Council. Alongside the City of London Police and a world‑leading justice offering – which includes the Central Criminal Court of England and Wales (the "Old Bailey") and a soon‑to‑be‑opened new justice quarter focused on economic and cyber crime – the City runs schools, major cultural institutions, extensive public green spaces and London's Port Health Authority, serving both local communities and the wider UK economy.

As a global financial centre, the City is home to the headquarters of major banks, insurers and professional services firms, as well as a flourishing maritime services sector. Latest data shows that UK‑based financial and related professional services contribute around 12% of UK GDP.
